Pianist Althea Chan has appeared as a recitalist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Asia, as well as the United States. Her concert appearances include performances at the Westdeutscher Rundfunk 3 (German National Radio), Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie(Herford, Germany), Bechstein concert series(Cologne, Germany), Convivium Musicum International Chamber Music Festival (Kragujevac, Serbia), Xinghai Concert Hall(Guangzhou, China), Meadowmount Chamber Music Festival(Westport, NY, USA), Namedy Castle (Namedy, Germany), among others.
As an avid chamber musician, she is a founding member of the Trio Affekti in the unusual combination of piano, violin and saxophone. The trio was selected as a fellow of the Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Doerken Foundation, and have collaborated with the Becker Concert and Artist Agency, Freunde Junger Musiker KölnBonn e.V., as well as Live Music Now Köln e.V..
Born in Hong Kong in 1989, Althea began her piano studies at the age of 6 with her parents, Mr. John Chan and Ms. Patty Yip. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music (Oberlin, Ohio, USA) as a student of Prof. Angela Cheng. During her studies at Oberlin, she also served as a piano instructor through the secondary piano program at Oberlin. She holds a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance (First-class Honours) from the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln (Cologne University of Music and Dance), where she studied under the tutelage of Prof. Nina Tichman.
Althea has recently moved back to Hong Kong. She will devote her time in both teaching and concert projects.
